Square foot gardening is the way to go if you live in an apartment, have a small back yard, or you don't know to much about gardening yet and just want to try it out.  It is a lot like gardening in containers, but with freedom to expand.
If you have know land such as an apartment then balcony or window gardening is your option.  This can work out quite well don't let it full you.  One 12" pot can grow a huge tomato plant that will bare tomatoes for months.
The rules for square foot gardening are quite simple and work for pots about that size as well.  You can build a rectangle structure out of wood and section off every 1 foot.  You can make it as large or as small a rectangle as you like.  In each square or in each 1 foot pot. you can plant as follows:
  1. Extra Large Plants: 1 seed per square foot
  2. Large Plants: 4 per square 6 inches apart
  3. Medium Plants: 9 per square 4 inches apart
  4. Small Plants: 16 per square 3 inches apart
Its that simple.  You can buy some potting soil to get you going and have your own vegetables growing in no time!Free Organic Gardening Chart
